Founded in 2014, the BHP Foundation is committed to blending “bold ambition, transformational partnerships and business acumen to catalyze new solutions to the world’s most complex social and environmental challenges". The Foundation has 6 programs, 3 global programs that are thematically focused (Education Equity, Environmental Resilience, and Natural Resource Governance) and 3 country programs (Australia, Chile, and Canada & US). Given the Foundation’s transition from a “start up” philanthropy (referred to as ‘Foundation 1.0’) to a more mature Foundation (‘Foundation 2.0’), an upcoming CEO handover, and the Foundation’s commitments outlined in their Measurement, Learning and Evaluation policy (adopted in 2022), the Impact and Evaluation team of the Foundation commissionned a comprehensive Organizational Assessment.

Universalia designed a document that outlines a methodological approach, scope, timeline, budget and final deliverables for an Organizational Assessment of the BHP Foundation. This document was informed by a document review of some internal BHP Foundation documents, weekly client meetings, 3 staff interviews with the CEO, CIO and COO, and a preliminary literature review on best practices for conducting organizational assessments.
